Slumping first baseman Carlos Delgado will remain in the Mets? lineup for now and hit fifth.

?It?s too early for me,? manager Willie Randolph said. ?A lot depends on how the team is doing.?

Delgado is hitting an anemic .206 with eight RBIs, but because the Mets are playing well, there?s no reason to change.

Hitting coach Howard Johnson said Delgado has hit the ball hard for outs and the numbers aren?t totally indicative of how he?s playing.

Even so, Johnson admits there are enough issues around Delgado that the team should be concerned.

?People have a legitimate reason to have questions when you?re older, have injury problems, and are coming off a bad season,? Johnson said.

Cubs 7, Mets 1: John Maine?s fastball command was much better than lately, save for the fastball Aramis Ramirez crushed for a two-run homer in the fourth that proved to be the game-winning hit.

The Mets had their chances, but had three double plays turned against them. The game was still winnable until the Cubs exploded for five runs in the eighth against Aaron Heilman and Jorge Sosa.

? LF Moises Alou keeps making progress in his rehab from hernia surgery. He?ll play in another minor league game Tuesday and there?s a chance he could be activated from the disabled list this weekend.

? C Ramon Castro is back to playing in extended spring training games to rehab his strained right hamstring. There is no timetable for his return.

? RHP Orlando Hernandez is still wearing a supportive boot on his right foot and is expected to return to New York in the next few days to be reexamined.

Medical Watch:

C Brian Schneider (bruised right forearm) was injured by a foul ball on April 19. He sat out April 20-21 and is day to day

LF Moises Alou (hernia) had surgery March 6. He went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 21, and he hopes to return by the end of April. He was swinging the bat in Florida in early April and played in a rehab game on April 20.

CF Carlos Beltran (stiff neck, shoulder) was limited to pinch-hitting duty April 17 but he returned to the lineup on April 18.

SS Jose Reyes (tight left hamstring) left the April 11 game, and he didn?t play April 12-13. He returned to action April 15.

RHP Pedro Martinez (strained left hamstring) went on the 15-day disabled list April 2. He won?t begin throwing until mid-May, pushing his return into June, at the earliest.

LHP Jason Vargas (hip) had surgery March 24. He went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 21. The team had no timetable for his return.

RHP Orlando Hernandez (right foot surgery in October 2007) opened the season on the 15-day disabled list. He began a rehab assignment with Class A St. Lucie on April 3, but he was shut down indefinitely on April 8. He will be in a walking boot until late April.

RHP Matt Wise (strained right forearm) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 2.

C Ramon Castro (strained right hamstring) opened the season on the 15-day disabled list. He might begin a rehab assignment in late April.

RHP Ambiorix Burgos (Tommy John surgery in August 2007) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 21. He likely will miss the entire season.

INF Jose Valentin (pinched nerve in neck) could begin playing with Class A St. Lucie in mid-May.
