Beltran helps Mets beat Marlins 5-4 (AP)

New York Mets' Luis Ayala of Mexico delivers a pitch during the ninth inning of a baseball game against the Florida Marlins Friday, Aug. 29, 2008 at Dolphin Stadium in Miami. Ayala earned his third save despite giving up four hits in the ninth, including an RBI single by pinch-hitter Mike Jacobs and a run-scoring double by Jorge Cantu as the Mets defeated the Marlins 5-4.

The New York Mets were one strike from defeat before Carlos Beltran came through with the big hit that had eluded them all night. Beltran hit a grand slam with two outs in the ninth inning off Kevin Gregg, and New York’s shaky bullpen held on for a 5-4 win over the Florida Marlins on Friday night. Before Beltran’s homer, the Mets were 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
