Desperate for a psychological boost, the New York Mets had the right man on the mound. Pedro Martinez likely to rejoin Mets next week (AP)

In this March 21, 2008 file photo, New York Mets starting pitcher Pedro Martinez warms up before facing the Washington Nationals in a Grapefruit League baseball game in Port St Lucie, Fla.. Pedro Martinez returned to the Dominican Republic to be with his sick father on Wednesday, May 21, 2008, delaying his plans to test his ailing hamstring.

Pedro Martinez is likely to rejoin the New York Mets‘ rotation early next week in San Francisco. On the disabled list nearly all season with a strained left hamstring, Martinez is scheduled to make a minor league rehab start Wednesday night for Class-A St. Lucie. If all goes well, his next outing probably will come during New York’s series June 2-4 against the Giants.
